OK So now we have bought the Tourneo, the job's not finished
Insurance

The struggles Make sure you can get insurance before buying a Tourneo
There are not many insurers quoting
Brokers have difficultly getting anyone to quote
On Line quotes are a struggle, because you have to put in your full details before you get to the vehicle selection stage
The 8 seat version is possible to get quotes, as it is classed as a Diesel car
The 9 seat version is classed as a Minibus, and needs a specialist minibus insurer

This is a difficult vehicle to insure, particularly the 9 seat version.
They ask questions like
"Why do you want this size?"
"What are you really going to do with it?
The quotes I was getting were in the £950 to £1100 region

Finally
we have the
answer
I found a company that quoted me £309 = They got the job
Of the emails that people send me, the most common subject is "Insurance".
These Tourneos are very difficult to insure for Private use - typical quote ( Ford Insurance) £900.
The Mark 4 version - pre 2000 is also more difficult.

8 seat versions can be insured.
I have found 3 insurers and these guys don't even know I've put them on my website.
They are not paying me to advertise their services.

CIS ( The Co-op) 0800 0282 492 were taking 8 seaters until recently, then they do not seem to have the Tourneo on their screens, so nowadays no quote. But perhaps they may come back into this market. Also if you have other insurance with them, household or life insurance they seem more likely to bend their rules.

Lifesure in St Neots 0870 366 1235 or 01480 402460 the guy to speak to in Nik Barnes

Egg - on line at Egg seem to be getting their act together recently. All around £320. I’m sure if you have a OK driving record you should get somewhere near that.

Egg do have some of the pre 2000 models on their on line drop down list, so you may be able to get a quote without actually speaking to someone.
  • FORD TOURNEO 2.5 (8 SEAT) GLX T/D 2496cc 2DR
  • FORD TOURNEO 2.5 (8 SEAT) GLX DSL 2496cc 2DR

DirectLine - on line at DirectLine also have these vehicles on their drop down list. I got a quote of 382.20 from them.
A WORD OF CAUTION You need to speak to them on the phone to convince them that you have picked the closest match to your Tourneo and what you have is the same but a newer version, now with a smaller engine. You should then be OK.
9 seat versions are very difficult to get insured.

I am researching the market, but as yet no good fortune

Ongoing Comments

August 2009

There seems to be a big problem with Insurers not wanting to list the Tourneo.

After many emails and letters, I finally got the following final answer from

Matthew Young,  Policy Adviser,
Liability & Motor, Risk and Regulation
Association of British Insurers

I quote his reply :-

The car code list is a voluntary listing of most of the makes and models of private car available in the UK to help insurers process the bulk of insurance applications.
It has already been explained that insurers do not consider that the vehicle in this case fits the criteria for the car code list. As such, applications have to be dealt with in a more bespoke way.
It is for individual insurers to decide which vehicles they wish to insure. Not all insurers will wish to cover a vehicle with multiple seats but, if you are unable to find suitable insurance either direct (internet or 'phone), then I suggest you contact an experienced insurance broker. I am sure that you will find an insurer, and indeed that you will receive more than one quote, but it must be remembered that insurers are free to decide whether to offer cover or not.

Well after following his advice I contacted quite a few specialist insurers, who all wanted massively high premiums, mainly saying that because they were creating a special quote that meant additional costs.

I decided to keep quiet, and continue with CIS as they had me as an existing customer and were unlikely to want to loose my custom.

July 2010

A massive increase in premium this year, alternative quotes using the
FORD TOURNEO 2.5 (8 SEAT) GLX T/D 2496cc 2DR
from the drop down list at Egg and Prudential brought in quotes of £440ish
HOWEVER Directline came up with £383.20. But there were restrictions on foreigh travel and a higher excess. So I decided to stay with CIS.

Insurance Log
  • July 2003 Lifesure £306.06
  • July 2004 CIS Insurance £311.78
  • July 2005 CIS Insurance £308.72
  • July 2006 CIS Insurance £292.22
  • July 2007 CIS Insurance £320.29
  • July 2008 CIS Insurance £299.26
  • July 2009 CIS Insurance £350.28
  • July 2010 CIS Insurance £409.83
Other quotes were difficult to obtain because of the accident in August 2008

Eurotunnel After writing to Eurotunnel, they have decided to charge all vehicles that are fully glazed at the 1.85 Metre rate

Autoroute Tolls The Tourneo is 1974mm high.
Therefore do ensure the French do not charge Class 2 on the Autoroute. Sit there and argue, Class 1 is up to 2 Metres. If you fit roof bars or a spoiler, that will take it above 2 metres, so then you will have to pay.
Also the bigger tyres I have fitted lift the rear over 2 metres when unloaded.
So when in France, keep some weight on the tail.
Speed traps What a pleasure it is to drive on the continent.
Being able to drive to the road conditions without having to worry about being a tiny amount over the speed limit.

Modifications Back a page
The Sound System I found the speakers provided were inadequate, even for simple listening to Radio 4.
So read about how I made improvements
Driving Lights I found the headlights on full beam inadequate, especially on country roads
So I added two extra driving lights, Hella FF50 lights that I was able to mpount neatly into the front grille.
Extra battery I found a crashed "Railtrack" Transit that had been extensively modified.
I found it had a second battery under the passenger seat.
I transfered much of the installation, and designed my own charging relay system.
