11th July 2003
249 Miles
Collect the Tourneo from Motornation

24th November 2003
7545 miles
After several fail to start due to a flat battery, usually caused by leaving the interior lights on, and several visits to Polar Ford, I finally took it to C D Bramalls in Batley, who replaced the battery without any hassle.

28th November 2003
7688 miles
Oil Change, Millers XSS and new filter. Well it was a year since it was filled at the factory, and I'm sure Millers XSS is a far better oil for long term life.

25th January 2004
10827
First "Service" by Polar Ford, Wakefield
Generally OK Cost £143.61
However they did overfill the engine oil by a whole litre, and charged me £33 for the 7.5 litres of their "Castrol workshop oil" rather than use the Ford oil from their own Parts Dept that would have cost around £15 for 10 litres .
I got no response when I raised the issue informally, just fobbed off with talk.
New pollen filter.

16th July 2004
21579 miles
Failed to start after being stood for 10 days

9th August 2005
22859 miles
Puncture destroys the rear nearside tyre.
Tyres not readily available, most stockists are quoting me over a week to get a tyre, finally HQ in Wakefield can get one in 2 days at a cost of £78.14.
It would appear that these Goodyear Cargo G26 tyres are not easily available.

29 September 2004
24989 miles
Major Service at Polar Ford, yet another battle.
I queried the engine oil, and got the response that I could provide my own.
Well this was good news as I could now put in Millers XSS at around £12 per can.
Millers oils are far better quality than the stock stuff these people normally keep, and Millers provide a free laboratory service to analyse their oils during use and will provide a report on the oil's condition.
The screen washer switch was becoming difficult to operate and the "cleaned" it
Polar replaced a washer jet that was clogging, but charged me for it rather than replace it under guarantee. Generally OK Cost £134.42

27th November 2004
27729 miles
Upgraded the wiper blades with Bosch blades
Driver's side from 690mm to 700mm
Passenger's from 600mm to 650mm
The extra visibility is useful.

25th January 2005
33796 miles
4 new tyres
Continental Vanco 195 75 16
£264

The fronts were down to about 2mm, not illegal but it is winter, and a slow puncture (that turned out to be a nail down the sidewall) to the rear offside prompted the decision. The rear nearside had a very slow drop in pressure, which turned out to be a nail square though the tread.
So, needing 3 tyres and a puncture repair, I decided to replace all 4.

18th February 2005
37087 miles
Service Light comes on
Well that's unexpected !!!

There is nearly 3000 miles before the service is due, and we are in mid Italy. It is late Friday evening, and we try to make contact with Ford
There was a sound typical of the front brake pads being worn out, so perhaps it is related to that ???
So I buy a set of front brake pads (102 Euros - £72 ) only to find that there is still plenty of pad on the ones removed.
Perhaps we had picked up a stone ??? Anyway yet another tip.
The brake kit comes with replacement bolts with a 12mm head, but the ones originally factory fitted were 13mm head.
I finally get a message back from Ford that the "Service Light" is not rigidly tied to anything that is being monitored, they say it just comes on.
I follow the instructions in the handbook to reset the service light.
Switch the ignition on to position II without starting the engine. Fully depress the accelerator and brake pedals for at least 15 seconds until the light flashes. Turn the ignition OFF.

22nd February 2005
37350 miles
Severe pinking from the engine and glow plug light flashing slowly
Now we are getting close to panic mode

Once again more messages to Ford from a cold mountain side on the isle of Elba
They recommend taking it to a Ford Dealer.
So, I have a look around and see the Fuel Filter Indicator is in the red. Perhaps dirty fuel clogging the filter. Removing it is easy with a unscrew of the large plastic ring at the top of the filter. I pour out the contents to see large amounts of reddish brown sludge. Now we read the TIS. It says that after replacing the filter the system has to be repressurised using a special tool. What !!! on a snow swept mountain in Italy !!!
Think about it .... Let's fill the filter to the top with fresh diesel, refit it and see what happens... Great it works.
Get new filter later from local Ford Dealer who later I discover has sold me one for the TDi engine not the TDCi.

16th March 2005
40363 Miles
Third "Service" by Polar Ford, Wakefield
Generally OK Cost £129.52
I provided the oil, Miller's XSS again.
I reported the screenwasher switch again and they said they had fixed it.

13th July 2005
46824 Miles
Air Conditioning not working
Symptoms are that the pump relay does not switch to connect the pump clutch.
I find the fluid sensor is not detecting any pressure.
So off to Polar, who don't seem to know what to do with an AirCon Tourneo.
So off to Benfield Ford in Leeds, who seem to know more.
They find a leak and replace a pipe. It takes a few days, but they did it all under warranty.

13th November 2005
52760 Miles
One horn fails, the other is weak - off to Polar Ford, Wakefield
They fitted two new horns under warranty.

7th December 2005
54645 miles
Major Service at Polar Ford.
I provided my own engine oil, Millers XSS at around £13 per can.
Polar charged me £143.12

4th January 2006
57252 Miles
MOT by Tim Toft, great guy, very fair, not over the top and looking for work.

17th May 2006
68917 Miles
Another "Service" by Polar Ford, Now move to Castleford
Generally OK Cost £159.88 - a massive increase.
I made the mistake of not getting a Quote when I booked it in, so they charged me top whack.
Even though I provided the oil, Miller's XSS again.
I tried to get the wheel nuts replaced under warranty, but Steve said I would have to approach Ford myself.

25th August 2006
74458 Miles
Power Steering Pulley failure
It looks like the bearing has overheated, and melted the plastic housing causing the bearing to seize and the belt to wear through.
Replaced it with a new pulley and belt.

1st September 2006
75138 Miles
The "Service light" comes on
I reset it myself

14th November 2006
78550 Miles
Replaced the Front brake pads and rear shoes
Tough they were not worn down mush at all, just the sound of braking made me thing they needed changing, before we set off to Europe.

7th January 2007
82996 Miles
Now well out of guarantee, so I'll do my own ordinary services
Miller's XSS again.
Headlamp bulbs changed to Ring +60%
Well worthwhile, the extra light is really useful, though I need to wheel the beam down when there is oncoming traffic.

8th January 2007
83051 Miles
MOT by Tim Toft, great guy, very fair, not over the top and looking for work.

15th May 2007
92070 Miles
Suddenly dead, no response from the remote to open the doors.
Use the key to open the door to find the battery completely dead..
Replaced battery from Wood Autos in Wakefield.
I decided on Varta, as it seemed difficult to get reliability information on batteries..

3rd July 2007
96506 Miles
4 new tyres
Well I thought I had done really well out of the Continentals and nearly went for straight replacement
However I took up a "4 for the price of 3" offer that Michelin were running at the time.
Read how I get on with the Michelins in the "Living with the Tourneo" section

14th August 2007
99889 Miles
Yet another Service needed, done by myself
Miller's XSS again, Fuel Filter, Pollen Filter and Fuel Filter.
The "O" ring on the sump plug was getting worn, so I decided to replace it.
What a farce !! Ford cannot supply the "O" ring, only a complete sump plug
After trailing round likely factors in Castleford, I was finally sent to one near Xscape (the leisure place)
The guy there found exactly what I needed, but because it was lunchtime and the staff we on their breaks, he told me to "F** off " and not disturb his break again. A FREE O RING !!!
I said I would drop him a packet of crisps next time I pass by.

28th August 2007
99504 Miles
The "Engine Warning" light came on !!!
Flashing amber glow plug light
I had just been driving uphill out of Huddersfield gently, no load = strange
I stopped, had a look round, nothing obvious, restarted the engine OK
Next week, driving out of Sheffield, uphill towards Castleton, same thing.
Strange !!!

8th January 2008
107218 Miles
MOT by Tim Toft, great guy, very fair, not over the top and looking for work.

17th January 2008
107842 Miles
Failed to start, low battery voltage.
I took the battery back to Wood Autos and they replaced it with a new version of the Varta Blue battery

4th February 2008
109010 Miles
Suddenly the engine started to overheat, while accelerating onto a motorway. off the scale, engine shut itself off.
I survived. I discovered I could make progress at tickover, any faster and it went off the scale.
I found that parked at the roadside with the engine on tickover the temperature gradually comes down.
Power steering OK. No water loss, tank is full. Heater blows cold. Water pump belt goes round and looks OK. Is it the water pump impellor that has come off the shaft?
Investigation finds the Water Pump has stripped its splines, and the Power Steering Pump has a worn drive.
Replace both, all in now fine except my wallet!!
See the detailed pictures of the Water Pump and Power Steering Pump

24th April 2008
115789 Miles
Yet another Minor Service needed, done by myself, I must be doing too many miles
Miller's XSS again, Oil Filter.
I've solved the the "O" ring on the sump plug issue. I bought a pack of 50 from a engineering supplies in Dewsbury for under £5.  That will last a few years.

24th May 2008
117214 Miles
I decided it would be prudent to change the Accessory Drive Belt, the age, mileage and intended journey to Norway featured in the decision.
Read about full details of changing the belt

8th July 2008
124410 Miles
Following the breakage of our Nearside door mirror unit in Norway, a replacement unit was bought from Doncaster Motor Spares for £20, and a glass from Polar for £34.77

21st August 2008
127042 Miles
Crash with Honda 4x4.... What a disaster !!!
4 weeks off the road. click for details

Replacement Exhaust system fitted.
See section on replacement exhaust.

1st December 2008
124410 Miles
Yet another Minor Service needed, done by myself, I must be doing too many miles
Miller's XSS again, Fuel Filter.

Now I have fitted Reverse Sensors, a easy fit kit that uses a radio signal from the rear to the dashboard. It works well, good idea.

3rd January 2009
132885 Miles
MOT by Tim Toft, great guy, very fair, not over the top and looking for work. Advised to replaced front discs due to corrosion and change the suspension bushes.

May 2009
around 142000 Miles
The problem of the Glow Plug Indicator flashing on long hills is getting worse
I can only drive by varying the accelerator pedal position continuously.
No more than 4 seconds of power, then a rest of at least 2 seconds.

14th June 2009
144720 Miles
I decide to clean out the fuel system
Drop the tank, but it is spotless, clean out the Fuel Filter Housing and fit a new filter.
I fit a new Air Filter and Pollen Filter.

21st June 2009
144744 Miles
I give in, no option, take it to Ringways in Leeds to sort out.
The problem turns out to be due to high passing rates on the injectors.
So 4 new injectors, costing around £1100.  They fit a new Fuel Filter housing and Fuel Filter.
Also I have them fit new front pads and discs for £166+VAT

30th June 2009
144974 Miles
Yet another Minor Service needed, done by myself, I must be doing too many miles
Miller's XSS again, Oil Filter.

13th September 2009
151500 Miles
Another Disaster !!!

Outside a cottage in the New Forest, where we had stayed overnight, open heathland, I had parked down a slope overnight.
Reversing up at high speed the next morning, assuming nothing behind ( open heathland), BANG !!!
I had crashed into a wooden electricity pylon that was invisible on my rear offside quarter.
Reversing sensors ??? = no good if you don't take notice !!

2nd January 2010
160580 Miles
The "Service light" comes on
I reset it myself

8th January 2010
160764 Miles
MOT by Tim Toft, great guy, very fair, not over the top and looking for work.

17th January 2010
161586 Miles
Air Conditioning is not working as well as it should.
I replace the rear passenger cabin motor unit that moves the vanes and water valves as a cog has broken inside. £105.40.
Then into Ringways for a refresh and check over.
Cost £81.
HOWEVER, whilst there they point out that the Dual Mass Flywheel is about to collapse and the Accessory Belt Tensioner bearing is about to fail.
They give me quotes for the job.

27th January 2010
160764 Miles
Yet another Minor Service needed, done by myself, I must be doing too many miles
Miller's XSS again, Oil Filter.

3rd February 2010
161805 Miles
I have the work done by Ringways to replace the Dual Mass Flywheel.
They also replace the thrust bearing and clutch slave cylinder.
I have the Accessory Drive Tensioner, Belt and suspension bushes replaced.
Total job cost £1022.24

18th April 2010
168656 Miles
4 New Tyres.
After only a little research I found that ATS had an offer on of £40 Sainsbury Voucher, and they were also offering 25% off 4 Michelin Agilis tyres. So 4 tyres cost £366.

15th July 2010
176245 Miles
The "Service light" comes on
I reset it myself

17th July 2010
176312 Miles
Yet another Major Service needed, done by myself
Miller's XSS again, Fuel Filter, Pollen Filter and Fuel Filter.
Fit new front disc pads, only 30,000 miles, the offside worn out yet the nearside have about 25% remaining.
BUT YET ANOTHER DISASTER.
I started the engine and saw oil dripping out underneath.
I had overtightened the Oil Filter Cap, cracking it.
So off to Ringways, £15.78 for a new one and I lost around one litre of oil.
